Calvary Mater JMO Handbook Story

The JMO (Junior Medical Officer) handbook is a resource developed by the staff at the Calvary Mater Hospital and well as Hunter New England Health to address fatigue in inexperienced medical staff. Because of the 24/7 nature of health industry, it is important to manage this risk in order to maintain a high level of care for patients.

“Doctors working more than 80 hours per week have been shown to be 1.6 times more likely to report an adverse patient event or medical error.”

“This educational framework has been developed to provide JMOs, clinical supervisors and medical administrators with a suite of practical tips and tools that assist with identifying and managing fatigue in the workplace.”

The framework has three overarching steps, Identify, Assess and Action. To illustrate these, I’ve developed icons and used colour codes throughout the document to correspond to these sections. It was important to break up large sections of text in order to make this information digestible.

This workbook includes worksheets and case studies to help guide the user through the necessary steps when fatigue risk may be present.

This work was undertaken during my employment at Printnova.
