Newcastle Mirage Story

Newcastle Mirage was a self-initiated design and marketing project. Running for 5 years as a joint partnership venture, Mirage developed a monthly print magazine surrounded by a community focused on music, arts and culture with Newcastle as the centrepiece.

I wanted to capture the working-class nature of Newcastle in the layout and design of Mirage. Nothing fancy or unnecessary, something blunt. I found the crossover of our city with its primarily industrial heritage mixed with the creative aesthetic interesting. The nature of zines and photocopied, disposable media led me to experiment with a scanner to create some of the branding elements. I would begin with a relatively standard logotype and print it, then scan it in - adjusting as the scanner moved across.

My role involved creative direction of the print magazine as well as digital marketing, content creation, writing editorial and interviews, event organisation as well as maintaining our website and digital mail-out.
